About

About the course

Offered by the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology of USC and led by Professors John Walsh, PhD and Julia Walsh, JD, the course GERO 489: Finding the Key to a Long, Happy Life in Nicoya, Costa Rica immerses students into the Nicoya Blue Zone. Through this course, students are able to gain in-depth exposure to the lifestyles that have been proven to improve quality of life and extend lifespans through the study of populations that reside within "Blue Zone" communities.

In May of 2022, the first group of 13 students traveled to Costa Rica for the GERO 489 course and explored life within the Blue Zones within various Costa Rican communities. Explore this site to learn more about the mission of the course!
